The Science: What exactly is that "Skin"?
Surface scum isn't oil; it’s a complex matrix of organic proteins, fats, and microorganisms. In any aquarium, organic waste (from fish food, waste, and decaying plant matter) breaks down. Some of these lighter-than-water proteins float to the surface. Once there, they provide a feast for specialized bacteria.
